“Composition”

Ellery Beck

Stand motionless in the dark. Stretch

your body into staves, let the sheet

music lay itself across your skin. Your body

a small symphony, your soft breaths

in harmony with the dishwashers

hum, the fridge light halos holding light

against your face, the grilled cheese

sizzling its own song in the background. Dance

in the freezer’s fluorescence, you are the choir

and the choreography. Don't stay still

now, keep up our late-night snack

slow dance. Sing me another kitchen sink

melody, I'll stay in musical notation for you.
