“Rocks on the Beach”
Jay Castro
You are the reader
And the writer
You are the listener
And the interpreter
You are the audience
And the director
You are the here and now
And what comes after
You are the needer
And the haver
The guardian
And the dependent
You are the visionary
And what you envision
You are the air
And the breather
You are the water
And the drinker
You are the lover
And their lover
You are the stones that you turn over
And you are what's underneath it
That is every rock that lies before us
On the beach
Of our home
May you accept the truth
Of everybody's journey
And of your own
May you accept the lies
And illusions
And their powers
That you've outgrown
May you honour
The acceptance
That you extend to those
Whom you know
you must
And let go of all the rest
That doesn't serve your dignity
Personality
And your body
Awash with the beach
Amongst the others
With the ocean's humble echoes
That each can broaden
Waiting to be picked up
And looked at
As if its face were our own
Knowing that
Anything else we see
Is from a rock
That knew to grow
Jay (they/he) is a second generation uninvited guest of Filipino descent who resides, creates art, heals, and studies on the stolen lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. As a poet he seeks to collage real and imagined symbols into a metaphorical present. As a therapist he seeks to root each client back into their living context and culture. With both he challenges systemic injustices that play out in our day to day lives and honours the healing process needed along the way.
