Artist Statement:

I am a visual fine artist and arts educator. I have been teaching in the Philadelphia community for over 15 years. My work is inspired by the people and our patterns of life. I journey through my expressions from the lens of a black women in a Black body. Themes in my artwork consist of race, joy, history, rebellion, Afrofuturism, strength, pain, power, motherhood, love and the relationships of womanhood through the Black woman’s anatomy.

Our culture, heritage and experiences shape our personalities and characteristics. These elements also mold us emotionally, spiritually, physically, and mentally. I like to capture this ever-evolving energy and vibration of people and places. I use such mediums as painting, drawing, ceramics, installation, and other mixed media to express this inspiration.

I devote my artwork to reestablishing the visual conversation with our souls. This is something that only the individual can recognize through a nostalgia that is hidden deep within our being. I am constantly inspired by this vibration, whether it is colors, a people, or an object. My senses are constantly being awakened.

I believe in cultural empowerment through creativity. I believe that learning and understanding your heritage enhances your sense of identity and raises your self- esteem. Gaining knowledge about other cultures and lifestyles gives you a grand perspective on the world that we live in.

In my expressions and community art practice, I incorporate art as a tool of transformation, self-exploration, and restorative healing practices. This perspective is rooted in Afrofuturism, imagination and abolitionist thinking. Art can tap into all levels of society, class, gender, structure, assessment, and ability. My creativity has taken me into many spaces within aspects of reformative justice, reproductive justice, therapy, museums and within traditional K-12 classrooms.

I am very passionate about my art. There can be no life without art. Without creative minds the foundations of civilization would crumble as we know it and I take that responsibility as an artist.
