Translate Me Not

New Filipin/x Writing and Art

submissions open from June 1 - July 31, 2021

Zine #3 is edited by a community of filipin/x creatives, academics, and writers.

decomp journal is now accepting unpublished submissions of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, art and media for its third themed zine, Translate Me Not: New Filipin/x Writing and Art.

What do we translate? When do we translate? Should we translate and what are we trying to pursue in translation? We welcome works that engage with translation in terms of and beyond language but also to recognize what gets lost (or illuminated) in translation across the Filipin/x diaspora.

Submissions should respond to the theme of un/translatability in and of Filipin/x languages and experiences. The term “Filipin/x” itself is a purposeful act of (mis)translation, and inspires reinterpretation of the proximities and distances in our own communities. In imagining decolonial futures, what might be considered un/translatable in language, being, and/or space?

Some examples of questions that submitters might consider around un/translatability in the Filipin/x diaspora are:

  • What is it about your experience of being Filipin/x that you can’t quite translate or articulate?

  • What is the embodied experience of translating and/or being translated?

  • How do we choose to make ourselves legible to one another in spaces of community?

  • How does language and the process of translation change over time, spaces, and/or contexts, especially through migration and/or colonialism?

We are accepting submissions from folks currently based in various locations around the globe, including the Philippines, where un/translatabilities circulate.

Artists, writers, and creators who are located in the multiplicities of Filipin/x identity and culture are encouraged to submit.
